Thomas Z. Scarangello, P.E., is a Managing Principal of Thornton-Tomasetti Group, Inc., a 500-person international engineering and design firm with 14 offices worldwide. He has more than 25 years of experience in structural engineering and is experienced in the application of state-of-the-art engineering technologies for building analysis, design and construction, including 3D modeling and interoperability. Mr. Scarangello has been instrumental in incorporating such technologies into the firm's design process. He has provided structural engineering services for a variety of building types, from long-span sports and entertainment arenas and stadiums to high-rise commercial and mixed-use buildings, in both steel and concrete. A registered professional engineer in 22 states, Mr. Scarangello has published numerous papers, authored many articles and publications and served as an expert witness.

John Milano, a Professional Engineer and Vice President of Hill International, Inc., has over 20 years of experience in construction management, business development, and general contracting for museums, educational facilities, high-rise office buildings, community centers, distribution centers, courthouses, correctional facilities, government buildings, financial, hospitality, and transportation facilities. Mr. Milano has managed all operations and been responsible for all business development, marketing and administration and profit and loss for a major construction management and general contracting firm in New York City.

PANEL 3: Liability and Electronic Discovery Issues in Design Technology

Chair: Ernest Holmes, AIA, Senior Consultant, PinnacleOne

Ernest Holmes, AIA, NCARB, NRCA is a Senior Consultant and forensic architect with PinnacleOne with over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Mr. Holmes has extensive experience in a wide variety of applicable areas. As principal of a 140 person A/E Design firm for over nine years, Mr. Holmes designed, coordinated, and managed a variety of projects including airports, jails, medical research facilities, hospitals, multi-family housing, courthouses, and municipal dock facilities. Since joining PinnacleOne, Mr. Holmes has performed many forensic analyses of construction defects and deficiencies, and has testified on architect-engineer standard of care issues in a variety of cases, both in arbitration and in court.

PANEL 4: Managing Risk Through the Use of Technology

Chair: Mark Gibson, Senior Manager, Ernst & Young
Mark Gibson has over 22 years of experience in the construction, real estate operations and outsourcing businesses. He specializes in business process assessments and re-engineering, project management, occupancy cost reduction, outsourcing, and procurement analysis and shared services assessments. Mr. Gibson teaches project management at NYU and International Development at Columbia in their masters programs. Originally from the UK, Mr. Gibson spent eight years living and working in Asia based in Hong Kong and Singapore before moving to the US. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Mr. Gibson has managed over $3 billion worth of projects and holds some of the highest qualifications in Project Management, including the Project Management Professional (PMP) qualification of the Project Management Institute. He is a full Member of the Association for Project Management (MAPM), a Chartered Arbitrator (MCIArb) and an active member of Corenet Global.

PANEL 5: Innovations in Structural Glass Design

Chair: Tim Macfarlane, Vice President, Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners PC
Tim Macfarlane founded Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners with Laurence Dewhurst in 1985 and is the Creative Design Partner. The firm is now an international structural engineering consultancy that provides structural design and facade engineering services for a wide range of projects in locations including the UK, the USA, mainland Europe, the Middle and Far East, Russia and the Caribbean, from its offices in London and New York. Mr. Macfarlane works with leading architects on challenging structures, and has headed the innovation of the use of glass in works ranging from artworks and glass stairs to the use of structural glass and large cable-hung glass walls in buildings. In the USA, Mr. Macfarlane is collaborating on arts, education, residential and public buildings across the continent.

  PANEL 6: Green Buildings: The Time Has Come

Chair: Michael Deane, Operations Manager, Sustainable Construction Group, Turner Construction Company
Michael Deane joined Turner Construction Company in November 2004 as East Coast Operations Manager of the Sustainable Construction Group, following 15 years of construction project management and administrative experience as both owner and construction manager. His work spans both public and private sector projects and includes work with for-profit and non-profit institutions. Mr. Deane’s responsibilities at Turner include training, green project setup, operational oversight, sales and acting as liaison to the US Green Building Council at the national and chapter levels. As a founding member and current Chair of the Board of Directors of the US Green Building Council-NY Chapter, and a LEED Accredited Professional, Mr. Deane is deeply involved with sustainable design issues.
